The hex dumbbell is so called due to the shape of the dumbbell head - hexagon in shape the six sides provide a great shape and functionality to what is - a dumbell! They can be made and finished in a range of materials including cast iron, rubber hex, urethane dumbbells and neoprene coaated too.

The Benefits Of Hex Dumbbells

The main benefit of the hexagonal dumbbell is that due to its design it won't roll. This is crucial if your gym floor is uneven. But the key to the dumbbell shape is not only the anti-roll, but the safety aspect in small spaces. They are also easier to stack, which can be helpful in a small home gym.

They are also better for certain exercises due to this greater floor stability. So for example if you are using them to perform push ups, they wont slide on the floor. Another exercise is the squeeze press, hex dumbbells are better for this.

The rubber coating also makes them more forgiving on your floors and quieter. Finally, they are also more ergonomic than other dumbbells, for example they are more comfortable to rest on your shoulders.

What To Look for When Buying?

Consider the weight range you need. If you are a beginner, then you need light weights now but you will want to push yourself as you get stronger. Consider the materials of the dumbbell, the rubber coated dumbbells for example can have advantages and are resistant to rust.

Also check out the handle design, do you want smooth or knurled? And finally consider the price. Hex dumbbells tend to be a more cost-effective option that other dumbbells.
