Smith Machines

Smith machines are very similar to a piece of strength training gym equipment known as a power cage, but has two significant differences. There are two guide rods on a Smith machine which assist the vertical lift of the barbell and there are also multiple points on the frame where, with a twist of your wrists, you can rack the barbell.

There is one major attraction of Smith machines, especially for beginners, and that is the safety aspect. As a spotter is not required, new lifters feel a lot more secure when lifting heavier weights that they would if they were lifting freely. There is another big plus on this machine, and that is the vertical locked in movement which gives the lifter the opportunity to improve their form before they move onto free weights.

As well as lifting weights and providing strength training through resistance, the Smith machine is also popular for doing squats. This is the technique used in professional weight and powerlifting and is as important as strength when it comes to performing squat lifts.  The squat relies mainly on the muscles in the thighs and bum to lift the weights but many other muscles are needed for stabilisation.

Injuries are frequent when lifting weights so any way that safety can be improved is welcome. If you want a Smith machine to use at home, make sure you have plenty of space for it to fit into easily, with room all around the outside of the equipment.
